Membership calculation before 1 April 2014

Your membership normally includes:

  • the years and days that you have been a member of the LGPS
  • membership purchased by a transfer from another scheme
  • extra membership that you have bought with additional contributions or by converting in-house Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs) into membership
  • extra membership awarded by your employer.

Part time workers

The calendar length of your membership is used to determine if you are eligible for a benefit. However, your membership is reduced to its whole time equivalent length for the calculation of your benefit.

Example of part time membership to calculate benefits

You work 18.5 hours per week for 10 years. Your benefits are calculated using 5 years membership.

18.5 ÷ 37 hours x 10 years = 5 years

If your hours change during your membership in the scheme, your benefits are calculated to reflect the changes.

If you do not have any contractual hours, your membership for each year in the LGPS is calculated on average weekly hours worked during each year.
