Deferred member (no longer paying in)

This area is for scheme members who have stopped paying into the Scheme and have not reached normal pension age.

If you leave or opt out of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) with at least 2 years membership you are entitled to deferred benefits. View the Leaver process flowchart (PDF, 47.1 KB).

Your benefits are held in the LGPS until either:

  • you decide to transfer them to another pension arrangement or
  • they are due to be paid.

You cannot receive a refund of your contributions if you are entitled to deferred benefits. If you have under 2 years membership in the Scheme you may be entitled to a refund. We will write to you to let you know.

Your deferred benefits increase each year in line with the cost of living and an annual deferred benefit statement is sent to your home address to let you know its value.
