Previously paid into the LGPS and have pension rights

Depending on criteria, your previous LGPS pension rights may be automatically aggregated with your new LGPS pension. We will write to you about your current pension situation and your options.

If you have a deferred benefit in the LGPS, you may be able to choose to retain it rather than aggregate it with your new LGPS pension. You must choose to do this within 12 months of rejoining the scheme. We will write to you to let you know your options.

Pension rights built up as a Councillor or Mayor in England or Wales cannot be joined with rights built up as an employee in England or Wales and vice versa.

Transfer in process

Your employer tells you about the Joiner Pack when you join the scheme.

You complete the Personal Details Declaration form included in the pack. You tell us about your previous LGPS pension rights on that form.

If your previous LGPS pension rights were with another fund, we contact them. When we receive your membership details from the other fund, we contact you. We explain your options and any deadlines involved.
